Is it dangerous to take 40 mg. of valium a day along with a 2 mg. xanax?

The valium is legally prescribed to me.
Pamela, in some ways I agree. But I would be taking these careful.

Answer:

anything over ur prescibed dose is dangerous…

40mg seems like a lot. that’s like 8 x 5mg tablets. the most i have had is 15mg.
anyways… valium and xanax is addictive. ur body does become immune. u could talk to ur doctor or psych about making it a higher dose.

That is a lot of medicine, and I get the sense your doctor doesn’t know about it. Your body will get used to this amount quickly, and you will crave more. What REALLY hurts is the withdrawal, which is best managed medically. You are playing with fire. Better to go into psychotherapy and work on what’s causing all that anxiety.

    Yes.

I don’t doubt your prescribed diazepam (valium), but I doubt that you are supposed to be taking 40mg a day. The maximum recommended daily dose of diazepam for adults is 10mg a day. In procedures such as endoscopies – the recommended dose is 20mg for sedation purposes. 40mg is way too much. Benzodiazepines in general are technically only supposed to be used on a short term basis, and not as a long-term medication. They are physically addictive, and your body develops tolerance to them quickly

Along with that, you are also taking 2mg of alprazolam (xanax). It is never a good idea to mix benzodiazepines for any reason. They both add to each other, further depressing your central nervous system, especially if you are on such an extreme dose of diazepam.

It sounds like you have built up quite a tolerance to benzodiazepines, and sounds to me like you are addicted.

I would immediately inform your healthcare professional, and work out a taper down plan, and possibly replace the diazepam with a benzodiazepine with a longer half life such as clonazepam to ease your tapering program. If you are taking these medications for anxiety or panic attacks I would suggest seeking help from a psychiatrist who can work with you and try to help you – and possibly prescribe some longer term medications such as an SSRI to help lower your anxiety threshold.

If you continue to take such high doses, you will only build up more and more tolerance – leading to you requiring a higher dosage to get the same effects, which will put such a strain on your CNS that it will undoubtedly have very dangerous if not fatal effects.

Good luck, and please do call a health care professional a.s.a.p
